The results of a four year European Commission project, which impact heavily on the food packaging industry, are to be unveiled at the Smithers Pira conference from Dec. 9-12 in London.

The 7th Framework European Union funded project Flavourings, Additives and food Contact materials Exposure Task, (FACET) has developed a mathematical modeling tool to estimate migration from packaging materials into foods under real conditions of use, with both deterministic and probabilistic outputs for exposure estimates.

It has also created a database of the chemicals that are likely to be contained in different packaging materials used across Europe.

Catherine Simoneau from the European Commission’s Joint Research Center will present an overview of what FACET has changed while other experts describe how the tool can be used to make exposure assessments.

The Plastics and Paper in Contact with Foodstuffs conference will also include presentations from the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, European Food Safety Authority, Official Food Control Authority of Zurich and the Dutch Institute for Public Health.
