The University of Massachusetts at Lowell recently hosted a seminar, which was billed as a collaborative research meeting between Dow Chemical Co., the U.S. Army’s packaging experts at its Natick Laboratories in Natick, Mass., and Gloucester Engineering Co. Inc. in Gloucester, Mass.

UMass Lowell proposed a collaboration with Dow for future research and development and business developments. Gloucester Engineering, which makes film machinery, and Natick laboratory officials were invited to show how they worked with the university in the past, and discuss benefits they have received from that relationship.

As part of the seminar, Dow ran its Agility 1020 linear low density polyethylene on a Gloucester Engineering blown film line with the company’s Pearl Technologies auxiliaries, including a new bubble guide to stabilize the center of the bubble, as well as side guides to keep the bubble centered in the frame before it goes into the nip rolls.

Gloucester Engineering donated the Pearl Technologies equipment to the university in Lowell, Mass.
