PepsiCo Inc. is beefing up recycling efforts in Tulsa, Okla., through the placement of more than 120 recycling bins at nearly 30 locations.

The beverage and food company is placing the recycling bins at Warehouse Market and Fiesta Mart sites at entrances and near fuel pumps “to help increase on-the-go recycling,” PepsiCo said.

“Increasing beverage recycling, particularly when people are away from their homes, comes down to simplicity and accessibility,” said PepsiCo director of sustainability Tim Carey in a statement. “We designed a bin that resembles a plastic bottle to stand out from a trash can, and always look to place it at convenient locations that people can easily identify.”

The Pepsi Recycling program began in 2010 with a goal of increasing beverage container recycling rates to 50 percent by 2018. Those recycling rates, since that time, have increased from 34 percent to 42 percent, the company said.

Recycling bins from PepsiCo have helped divert more than 160 million bottles and cans from disposal since the program’s beginnings.
