Protoplast is opening its first consumer products production through its acquisition of ET Industries and its products, such as a sink stopper.

Protoplast Inc., a custom injection molder in Cobourg, Ontario, has purchased a Toronto company, ET Industries, giving Protoplast its first line of proprietary consumer-products — kitchen and bath items such as sink stoppers, sprayers and shower heads.

Patricia Hart, manager of inside sales and purchasing, said the Toronto-based ET Industries had been a customer, and Protoplast already was molding and assembling many of its products.

The molder bought ET Industries from Martin Tracy, who remains with the business and now handles sales of the kitchen and bath line. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The consumer products are sold at Bed, Bath & Beyond stores, online through ET Industries’ web site and in catalogues, Hart said.

The move to get into direct sales of consumer products helps diversify Protoplast, a family owned company that also serves the automotive, electronics and medical/biotech markets. Protoplast runs 16 presses, and does injection molding, injection blow molding and injection transfer blow molding.

“It’s the first time that we’ve ever dealt directly with the end consumer,” Hart said.
