Schneider Electric SA, the big French maker of energy management and electrical distribution systems, has purchased Invensys plc, the London-based conglomerate with holdings in process automation technologies — including Eurotherm Inc., a supplier of controls for plastics machinery.

Schneider Electric, of Rueil-Malmaison, announced Jan. 17 that it has completed the deal. The combined operation creates a giant business that serves industrial and energy infrastructure end markets, company officials said.

Schneider Electric is paying $5.2 billion for Invensys.

In the plastics industry, Invensys Eurotherm USA, of Ashburn, Va., supplies a number of machinery controllers, including the Maco Compact.
